Every year, Coimbra draws thousands of visitors to its lively academic celebrations where thousands of enthusiastic students proudly parade their black capes through the streets, singing folk songs and filling the streets with the sound of hundreds of guitars. One of the most important traditions is the Burning of the Ribbons, a ceremony that marks the completion of their chosen course. This takes place in May, it symbolizes the end of their student days.

Another place worth visiting is the famous ‘Portugal dos Pequenitos’ it is theme park for the Little ones, situated on the south bank of the river. This is a wonderful space where visitors of all ages can explore replicas of typically Portuguese villages, national monuments and miniature buildings. Be sure to visit the intriguing ruins of the Monastery of Santa-Clara-a-Velha, nearby.

At the highest point of the city, you will find the prestigious University of Coimbra and the majestic eighteenth century library (Baroque Library) and the charming Botanical Garden. In the near proximity you can also pay a visit to the the sixteenth century, New Cathedral, and the famous Machado de Castro National Museum.

‘O Quebra Costas’ as it is locally known, translates to The Back Breaker. It is a long staircase leading from the Highest point in Coimbra’s historic center to it’s downtown area which has in itself become a tourist attraction. So if you feel up to it give it a go. Along the way you will find lively streets, full of typical restaurants and bars, shops of all kinds and many cafes.

The Old Cathedral, City Hall and the Church of Santa Cruz are among the main attractions of the area and definitely worth a visit.
